In-Depth: Toyota Tundra Capstone Review

The only thing missing on the Toyota Tundra Capstone is a Lexus badge.

The Toyota Tundra Capstone is an exceptional choice among contemporary pickup trucks. With a wide array of features, the Tundra Capstone has everything the automaker offers. With a towing capacity exceeding 10,000 pounds and the impressive i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, it delivers performance that truly lives up to expectations. The Capstone is destined to become a legendary trim level in pickup trucks. After spending a week behind the wheel of this Toyota, here are some initial thoughts on the pickup truck.

Here’s what the Toyota Tundra Capstone gets right

Full transparency ahead: I have not driven many trucks like the 2023 Toyota Tundra. It was one of the first trucks I’ve been behind the wheel of in a long time. My expectations remained high because it was a Toyota, but I didn’t know what to expect. Even though the Tundra is quite large and intimidating from the outside, it was straightforward to drive. Toyota included plenty of technology throughout the truck, making driving, parking, and working easy.

Each seat in the cabin was extra comfortable, and Toyota thought of a lot before sending the Capstone into the wild. Cupholders are everywhere, enough space for a laptop or other work materials on the center console, and a wireless Apple CarPlay to keep you connected while driving.

How does the 2023 Tundra drive?

While the 2023 Capstone is undeniably a full-size truck with large dimensions, its advanced cameras and technology contribute to a surprisingly manageable driving experience. The number of cameras strategically positioned around the Tundra’s exterior ensures minimal blind spots. It facilitates easy navigation, even in the Target parking lot, which can get scary quickly during the holidays.

Inside the truck, a 14-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia touchscreen and a 10-inch color Head-Up Display (HUD) offer informative displays without overwhelming me. The touchscreen helped me access various camera angles, providing a 360-degree view of the truck’s surroundings. This proved to be a valuable feature for negotiating curbs and squeezing into tight parking spaces. You can trust me to take press vehicles to the local shopping plaza for testing – have no fear.

Including Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto simplifies on-the-road navigation, and the system’s capability to read text messages enhances safety by minimizing distractions. Toyota also has integrated power running boards and the BedStep system, which made it easy to get in and out of the truck at my average height.

How much is a fully loaded 2023 Toyota Tundra?

The 2023 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Capstone represents the epitome of a fully-loaded pickup. While the base model Tundra has a price of $37,865, the Capstone takes it to another level, starting at $76,145 with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain. This configuration includes a 10-speed automatic transmission, part-time four-wheel drive with an electronically controlled transfer case, and an automatic limited-slip differential.

There was no shortage of features during my week with the Toyota Tundra Capstone. The Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) utilizes cameras strategically placed on the front, side mirrors, and rear, significantly enhancing visibility. The responsiveness and ease of maneuvering around town were noteworthy. Even with a price tag approaching $80,000 for this fully loaded, full-size truck, the factory configuration leaves little to be desired.

Does the Tundra Capstone get good fuel economy?

Equipped with the i-FORCE MAX hybrid system, the Tundra Capstone gets 19 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. That works out to 21 mpg combined. This mirrors the fuel economy of the four-wheel drive Limited Hybrid, Platinum Hybrid, and the 1974 Edition Hybrid. Meanwhile, the 4×2 Limited Hybrid, Platinum, and 1974 Edition exhibit slightly improved fuel efficiency at 20 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 22 mpg combined.

I saw consistent fuel economy figures during my time with the Tundra Capstone. The i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, delivering an impressive 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque, underscores remarkable power capabilities.

Toyota’s innovative hybrid system is commendable across the board. While the Tundra Hybrid may not initially stand out for its fuel economy, the hybrid system is a testament to impressive engineering and performance.

In conclusion

The 2023 Toyota Tundra Hybrid Capstone isn’t a one-size-fits-all choice. It caters to individuals looking for a luxurious truck with advanced technology. With plenty of space for five people, a towing capacity exceeding 10,000 pounds, and features designed to enhance the full-size truck experience, it is tailored for those who prefer both sophistication and capability.

In conclusion, I think the Toyota Tundra Capstone is a good choice for drivers who prioritize a luxurious and technologically advanced truck. The Tundra Capstone exemplifies Toyota’s commitment to delivering a well-rounded vehicle with its innovative hybrid system, impressive power, and thoughtful design elements.
